Lake Okareka Newsletter - December 2007

Here we are nearly at the end of another year. December certainly arrives with a rush.

The brigade has been very quiet over the last few months, with only 10 call-outs for the year so far –four of these being in late October/early November, and two of these four being outside our area. One was a scrub fire in Kuirau Park which occurred during a training session at Castlecorp.  The other was a structure fire at Tarawera. Due to the rapid response of our crew, our appliance was first on the scene, and able to isolate and contain the incident. It’s good to see that our commitment to regular training is invaluable when needed!

We have three new members, all of whom have undertaken a basic firefighting course. We still require more members, so if you live locally and want to give something back to your community, this is a great way to do it.

Thankfully, Guy Fawkes was a non-event for us this year, as we received no turn-outs from misuse of or accidents with fireworks. Town also reported that the number of incidents was a lot lower other years.

We are currently in the process of trying to obtain a water tanker to assist with fire suppression where water supplies are non-existent. If you know of or have contacts who may be able to assist with this (eg. Fonterra, etc.), I would be grateful if you could call me.

As you can tell from the weather over recent weeks, the summer season has kicked off to a hot and dry start. Fire reports indicate much of the same conditions throughout the summer. Please remain vigilant in reporting smoke sightings and observing fire bans. Thank you to those residents who phone me to advise of their permitted fires. Please be aware, however, if an incident is reported then we must respond if called out.

For further information on the brigade or any other enquiries, please don’t hesitate to contact me (Phone 362 8874).

Have a safe and happy festive season.

Phil Muldoon
Chief Fire Officer
